Once you’ve completed this e-COURSE, you can then determine if you want to take our Basic Introduction to Sailing Class and/or our ASA 101 Basic Keelboat, ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising, and ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering classes.
Basic Introduction to Sailing Course:
For NOVICE SAILORS, A 2 1/4 hour (semi-private) lesson where each student will get a “feel” for sailing. Literally! Each student will have ” wheel time” steering the boat. Our experienced (45 years) United States Coast Guard licensed Captain will guide you through the class. A unique “hands-on” experience your first time on the water. We’re proud that 100% of students surveyed, said they would recommend this class to a friend!
All Basic Introduction To Sailing Classes are scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8:15pm, subject to availability.
YACHT SHARE “Test Drive” CLASS:
For EXPERIENCED SAILORS curious about a hassel free, cost effective way to sail this summer!! All yacht share “Test Drives” are semi-private “on water” lessons held on Saturday evenings from 6pm-8:15pm, subject to availability. The class includes orientation to pre and post launch procedures and an explanation of how the share plan system works. Also included are crew tips and step-by-step discussions related to man-overboard and drop/retrieve anchor procedures.

Cost: $200 / Student
ASA 101 Basic Keelboat
Perfect introductory course to help you learn about sailing.
Format: Taught in 4 three hour classes (12 hours total).
Cost: $420 includes books and course materials and 1 year ASA membership. Receive a $25 discount when two people book as a couple or when two friends take the class together. One-on-one Instruction, $150 additional.

ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising
Prerequisites: ASA 101 Basic Keel-boat Sailing Certificate.
Provides necessary knowledge to safely cruise in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew in moderate winds and sea conditions.
Format: Taught in 3 three hour classes and two 3.5 hour classes (16 hours total).
Cost: $520 includes books, course materials, ASA 101 and ASA 103 certifications. Receive a $35 returning student discount if you’ve had classes with us in the past. One-on-one Instruction, $150 additional.

ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering
Prerequisites: ASA 101 Basic Keel-boat Sailing Certificate and ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising Certificate
This is an advanced cruising standard for sailors with cruising experience. Certified students act as skipper or crew of a 30-50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters. The course includes basic navigation, cruise planning, advanced anchoring techniques, boat systems and maintenance procedures. Most charter companies require a sailing resume from the Skipper chartering the boat, and look for this certification.
Cost: $530 Format: Taught on Lake Michigan from Waukegan or Milwaukee. It is offered in 4 formats. Consecutive weekend, whole weekend or combined with Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA103) or Coastal Navigation (ASA105) in the popular “On Safaris” 4-day format cruising from Milwaukee or Waukegan.
Sailing Refresher – Semi-Private:
Available for novice or seasoned sailors looking for a “refresher” course. Format: Course is divided into four, semi-private, 2 hour sessions:
- (1) orientation sail – includes all pre and post sail preparation procedures
- (1) crew clinic – we train your crew so they know what’s expected of them when under sail & docking
- (1) docking clinic – includes starboard side throttle and port side tie-up practice
- (1) check out sail – you skipper the boat and perform all procedures while directing your crew
Cost: $800 (One-on-one Refresher – $200 additional)
Chicago Yacht Share Bare-boat Charterer Requirements
In order to skipper our yacht(s), for your safety, and the safety of your guests:
NOVICE SAILORS: Must have ASA 101 and ASA 103 or US Sailing (equivalent) credentials.
EXPERIENCED SAILORS: Must be a USCG Licensed Captain with sailing endorsement, and/or documented sea time on a similar size vessel.
ALL SAILORS, BOTH NOVICE AND EXPERIENCED, MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE AND PASS OUR SEMI-PRIVATE:
- 2 hour orientation sail
- 2 hour docking clinic
- 2 hour crew clinic, and
- 2 hour check out sail
Sea Safaris ASA classes can be taken at Belmont Harbor in Chicago, as well as in Waukegan, and Milwaukee.
